Are you looking for copywriter but don’t know where to start?
Perhaps you doubt the skills and results that a copywriter can get for your business?
"Are they really all they're cracked up to be?"
You might also be thinking:
"Why should I pay for a writer when I can I write well myself?"
Well, the short reply is, how's business going?
If you're not getting the clicks, sales and conversions you want, it's high time to consider hiring a copywriter.
(And it's got nothing to do with how well you write, FYI...)
Top copywriters can be the difference between a business succeeding and a business failing.
So, consider a copywriter an investment. They're certainly not an expense!
They will (if you hire the right one) do a good job and help grow your business.
With that - this post aims to help you if you're a business owner looking to hire a copywriter.
I'll explain what to do, how to find the right copywriter and what to expect from the finished written copy.
Copywriting services differ across the board based on who offers them and what they can do for you.
Rates are dependent on experience and time in the copywriting profession too.
Copywriting rates differ also.
Some are more affordable; others will eat you out of house and home (literally)
To be clear, these are a small handful of projects a copywriter *should* be able to work on.
My advice is, if a copywriter says they can't do these projects - avoid them and move on!
Copywriters are usually freelancers, unless you're employing a copywriter (which works differently)
So, back to copy projects. They can include:
The more established the copywriter is, the higher rate they'll charge.
It's worth considering that when working with a more experienced writer, you'll be almost guaranteed of these things:
Now a good thing to look out for is the 'day rate' that a copywriter sets.
This is a great way to get your copy needs met without hidden fees and charges jumping out at you , the business owner.
A copywriter's day rate is the price a freelance writer charges for one day of their writing work.
This rate varies widely depending on several key factors, including the writer’s skill level, type of project, experience, and availability.
It is important to know that a copywriter’s day rate doesn't reflect the quality of copy written.
Day rates should be viewed as an indication of the time and effort required to complete a project; they are not indicative of the value or effectiveness of the end product.
To put it simply - a day rate can be very reasonable AND the work produced can be superb! Highly converting and far better than what you have already.
When selecting a copywriter for your project, take into consideration these factors before deciding who to hire.
1. Ensure you find someone with the right skill set and experience for your needs.
2. Match their pricing model so it works with your budget.
3. Weigh up the importance of your project. Certain projects may require more experienced writers with higher rates than others.
4. Be clear on payment and cost to you as the business owner.
Ultimately, finding the right copywriter at an appropriate day rate takes research.
But! Following these tips will help set you up for success while staying within budget.
When it comes to copywriter rates, there are a few elements that come into play.
The primary thing is the copywriter's level of skill and experience. Those who have more expertise tend to charge higher fees for their services.
The scope and complexity of the project also affect the rate.
If it requires research or specific knowledge (such as a medical background), it will likely be more costly than simpler assignments with shorter timeframes.
Experienced copywriters typically demand higher fees than those who are just starting out.
So too (most of the time) an experienced copywriter offers greater value due to their skills and increased efficiency working on larger initiatives, like website content or sales papers.
Therefore, when deciding upon investment options, consider finding a fee that works best for both you and the copywriter while helping you reach your business goals long term.
Finding the right copywriter for your business can seem overwhelming, but it's essential to have quality words that resonate and work with your target audience.
By understanding what to expect from a copywriter and evaluating their skill set, experience, and pricing, you can be sure you're getting the best return on investment.
You can expect:
When it comes to freelance copywriting, there are a few different pricing models that may be used (which can be confusing AF!)
Each of these can affect the 'day rate' of a copywriter, depending on the project and writer's experience.
Here's an overview:
Hourly Rate: This model works well for short-term projects like social media posts and press releases.
It allows clients to pay for the exact time spent on the project and can be great when working with entry-level or junior copywriters.
Flat Fee/Day Rate: This model is often used for any projects which need a bit more depth, such as website content, sales pages, email campaigns and landing pages.
It gives writers more control over their rates and can result in lower prices per page/word count than an hourly rate (so is beneficial for the business too)
Project-Based Fees: In this model, writers calculate their rates based on the complexity of the project or estimated hours required to complete it.
Project fees are generally higher than flat fees as they include additional services such as research or rounds of revisions/edits.
Per-Word Rate: This method is frequently used by experienced writers who have established their own rates based on market value and their portfolio's.
Writers usually charge a higher fee per word count if they're familiar with the topic or if less research is involved in creating the written content.
Fixed Price: This model works well for large projects that require multiple rounds of revisions, such as keyword research, multiple blogs and full website rewrites.
With a fixed price structure, clients know exactly what they’re paying for before any work starts, allowing them to budget accordingly.
Note: Ultimately, each project will require its own unique approach, so finding the right balance between cost-effectiveness and quality should always be a top priority when selecting a copywriting service.
Finding the right copywriter is essential for ensuring a successful result. With so many writers out there, it's mega hard to know who to hire!
Here are my tips to help you (and of course, you can always hire me... I'm great with words!)
1. Look for experience: Experience is key to finding the right copywriter. A suitable copywriter should have experience in the type of project you’re looking to accomplish most importantly.
Or at the very least - experience in the niche you're working in.
If you’re looking for someone to write content related to SEO, look for a writer who has experience writing SEO-optimised content.
Similarly, if you’re looking for someone who can write effective direct-response copy for, look for that.
2. Understand different types of copywriting. See the 'copywriting projects' section of this post.
3. Ask for samples: Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential writers, take time to review their previous work or portfolio's to get an idea of their writing style and the quality of work they produce.
If you're lucky, some writers may even write a bespoke sample for you! (I do!)
4. Assess their communication: Good communication skills are essential.
It allows both parties to stay on track throughout the duration of the project and ensures all deadlines are met without any confusion or miscommunication along the way.
5. Determine how much time is needed: Before hiring a copywriter, make sure that they have enough time available to complete your project within an agreed timeframe - based on the scope and complexity.
Additionally, make sure any revisions or updates required after delivery are included in the agreement so that everyone is on the same page about expectations.
6. Know what rates they charge.
Keep in mind that cheaper isn't better - while lower rates may mean more value upfront, higher rates come with higher quality as well as quicker turnaround times.
